Synthetic Turf in Houston That Drains and Lasts

Lay turf straight on that clay and water pools, the surface dips and odors build up. So we dig out the old grass and soil, set a crushed rock base, grade it to shed water and compact it in layers. Only then do we roll out the turf, join the seams and brush in the infill.

How long does artificial turf last?
Good quality synthetic turf often lasts 15 years or more when it is installed on a solid base and cared for. Heavy use shortens that. A busy dog run or a play area wears faster than a front lawn that people mostly look at. Strong Texas sun also fades cheap turf faster, so we steer you toward products with UV protection. Rinsing, brushing the blades upright and topping off infill every so often all help your turf last longer.
Does artificial turf drain well during Houston storms?
It drains well when the base is built right. Most turf backing is perforated or fully permeable, so water passes through the blades into the crushed rock base below. The problem in Houston is the clay under that base, which soaks up water slowly. That is why we grade the base so water sheds away from your house, and we add a French drain when a yard already holds water. A turf lawn laid straight on clay will puddle, so ask any installer how they plan the base.
Is artificial turf good for dogs?
Yes, artificial turf for dogs is one of the most common reasons Houston homeowners call us. Pet turf ends muddy paws and dead brown spots. For dog areas we use turf with a backing that lets urine drain through, and we add an odor-control infill such as zeolite on top of the sand. Pick up solid waste as usual and rinse the area with a hose, more often in hot weather. A good base under the turf matters even more in a dog run, since it has to drain every day.
Does artificial turf get hot in the Texas sun?
Yes. In full sun, synthetic turf gets much hotter than real grass. Research from Penn State's Center for Sports Surface Research found turf surfaces often run 35 to 55 degrees hotter than natural grass. Shade from trees, a patio cover or a pergola helps a lot, and a quick rinse cools the surface for a short time. Lighter colors and some newer cooling products can help too. If kids or pets will play in full afternoon sun, we talk through these options during your visit.
Artificial turf vs sod: which is better for my yard?
It depends on how you use the yard. Artificial turf costs more up front, but it needs no mowing, no fertilizer and little water, and it grows fine in shade. Sod costs less to install, stays cooler in summer and feels like a real lawn, but it needs regular water and care. Many of our clients use both: sod in sunny open areas and turf in shady spots, side yards or dog runs. We install both, so we can give you an honest side-by-side quote.
Will my HOA allow artificial turf?
Many Houston-area HOAs allow artificial turf but have rules about how it looks, such as color, blade height and where it can go. Rules vary from one neighborhood to the next, so check your deed restrictions before you buy. We can give you product details, samples and a layout drawing to include with your HOA application. That makes approval easier and keeps your project on schedule.
