Do I need a permit for a retaining wall in Houston?
It depends on the wall and the city. Under the International Residential Code, which many Texas cities adopt with local changes, a retaining wall up to 4 feet tall, measured from the bottom of the footing, is usually exempt from a permit unless it holds up extra load, like a driveway, a slope or a structure above it. Taller or loaded walls typically need a permit and an engineered design. Your HOA may also need to approve the plan. We check the rules for your address before we build.
What is the best material for a retaining wall?
For most Houston yards, natural stone and segmental concrete block are the best choices. Stone looks natural and can match a home's stone trim. Block is made for retaining walls, stacks evenly and comes in many colors. A concrete core with stone veneer works for formal walls. Timber costs less at first, but wood rots over time in wet soil. Why do retaining walls fail?
Most failures come from water. When rain soaks the soil behind a wall and has no way out, it adds pressure until the wall leans, bulges or cracks. Other common causes are a thin or poorly compacted base, a first course that was not buried, and walls built too tall without reinforcement. Our clay soil makes this worse because it swells when wet. That is why every wall we build gets gravel backfill, a drain pipe and a solid footing.
What is the difference between a retaining wall and a stone border?
A retaining wall holds back soil where the ground changes height, such as a raised bed, a slope or a step down to a pool. It needs a footing, backfill and drainage because it carries real weight. A stone border or edging is low and mostly decorative. It outlines flower beds, tree rings and paths, keeps mulch in and grass out, and gives the yard a clean line. Many yards use both, and we build both.
Can you repair my leaning retaining wall?
Often, yes. We start by finding out why it moved, whether that is trapped water, a weak base or roots. Small sections can usually be taken down and rebuilt with a proper base, gravel backfill and drainage, using the same stone or a close match. If most of the wall has failed, rebuilding it the right way usually costs less over time than patching it again and again. We will tell you which option makes sense after we see it.
