A gazebo is different from a pergola or a patio cover. It stands on its own out in the yard, it has a solid roof, and its sides stay open. That makes it a destination: a place to read, eat, watch the game or sit by a fire without going back inside.
In Houston, that roof earns its keep. Do you need a permit to build a gazebo in Houston?

Is a custom gazebo better than a hardtop gazebo kit?
A hardtop kit costs less up front and works well for a small, temporary shade spot. A custom-built gazebo is sized to your yard, set on proper footings, and matched to your home's roof and trim, so it looks like it belongs there. It can also carry heavier add-ons like ceiling fans, lights, a stone fireplace or a TV wall. If you want a structure that lasts and adds to your home, custom is usually worth it.
Can a gazebo stand up to Houston storms?
A roofed gazebo catches wind like a sail, so how it is anchored matters as much as how it looks. We set posts on concrete footings sized for our clay soil and tie the frame together with metal connectors so the roof stays put.
