A prefab outdoor fireplace usually runs about $1,500 to $9,000 installed, and a custom masonry fireplace about $6,000 to $20,000. Size, stone, fuel type and seat walls move the price the most. Should I get a gas or wood-burning fire pit?
Wood gives you the crackle, the smell and real flames for roasting. It also means smoke, ash cleanup and more space around the fire. Gas (natural gas or propane) lights with a key or switch, burns clean and shuts off in seconds, which is why many Houston homeowners pick it for patios close to the house. Natural gas needs a line run from your meter. Propane uses a tank that has to be refilled. We walk you through the trade-offs for your yard before you decide.
Can I use my fire pit during a burn ban?
It depends on the order in effect. Fort Bend and Harris counties issue burn bans during dry spells, and the rules for backyard fires can change with each order. Recent Fort Bend County orders have allowed fires only when they are fully contained in an enclosure built to hold in flames, sparks, embers and ash. Before you light a wood fire during a ban, check the current order or call your county fire marshal. Gas fire pits are often easier to use when wood fires are limited, but check the order to be sure.
How far should a fire pit be from my house?
There is no single number for every yard. Your city's fire code, your HOA and the fire pit maker's instructions all set limits, and wood fires need more room than gas. We plan the location during design and keep the fire clear of the house, fences, trees, low branches and roof overhangs. We also think about wind, smoke and where people will sit, so the fire is safe and pleasant to use.
Can you put a fire feature under a patio cover or pergola?
Often, yes, with the right feature. An outdoor fireplace with a chimney is built to carry smoke up and out, so it is a common choice under covered patios in Houston. An open wood fire pit under a low roof is a bad idea because of heat and smoke. Some gas fire tables are rated for covered spaces when the maker's clearances are met. We plan the fire feature and the cover together so both work safely.
