Most patio covers we build fall into three ranges. A standard cover up to about 200 sq ft runs $4,000 to $10,000. A mid-range cover of 200 to 500 sq ft, often with cedar or insulated aluminum and add-ons like fans and lights, runs $10,000 to $20,000. Large custom covers over 500 sq ft, or with custom rooflines and columns, start around $20,000. Size, roof style, materials and electrical work drive the price. Do I need a permit for a patio cover in Houston?
In most cases, yes. An open patio slab usually does not need a building permit, but once you add a roof it becomes a structure. Inside Houston city limits, that means a building permit through the Houston Permitting Center. Sugar Land, Katy, Pearland and unincorporated Harris and Fort Bend County have their own rules, and many HOAs want to approve plans too. We check what your address needs while we design your cover.
Will a patio cover match my house?
It should, and that is one of the biggest differences between a custom cover and a kit. We can tie the new roof into your existing roofline, match your shingles, and wrap posts in brick or stone to match your home. The goal is a covered patio that looks like it was built with the house, not added later. We show you the plan before any work starts.
Patio cover or pergola: which is better for Houston?
A patio cover has a solid roof, so it blocks sun and rain and can hold ceiling fans, lights and a TV. A pergola has an open top of beams and slats that gives filtered shade and lets rain through. With July highs in the mid-90s and about 50 inches of rain a year, many Houston homeowners choose a patio cover for a space they can use every day. If you want some light to reach your windows, a louvered pergola is a good middle ground.
What is the best material for a patio cover in Houston?
Wood covers, often cedar, give a warm look with exposed beams and can match a traditional home. Aluminum covers, including insulated panels, cost less to maintain and will not rot. Can you build an outdoor kitchen or fireplace under a patio cover?
Yes. Many of our patio covers are built around an outdoor kitchen, a fireplace or a TV wall. We plan the roof height, venting and clearances around the grill or fireplace, and we run power for fans, lights and outlets during the build. Doing the cover and the kitchen together usually saves time and keeps the design consistent.
Will a patio cover make my house darker?
A solid roof does cut some light to the rooms behind it. We can reduce that with a taller roof pitch, a higher beam line, or a design that leaves part of the patio open. Some homeowners pair a patio cover with a pergola section to keep light in one area. We look at which rooms face the patio and plan around them.
