Concrete Overlay or Replacement? Is Your Slab a Good Fit?
Resurfacing works best on concrete that is sound but worn: surface cracks, stains, faded color, rough or pitted spots, or an old finish you are tired of. It does not fix a slab that is still settling or heaving. Much of the Houston area sits on clay that swells when wet and shrinks when dry, so slabs here can move. If a slab is still moving, cracks will come back through a new surface, and replacement is the better choice.

How much does concrete resurfacing cost in Houston?
Most resurfacing jobs we do fall into three ranges. A standard overlay on up to 500 square feet runs about $3,000 to $6,000. Decorative stamped, stained or troweled overlays on 500 to 1,000 square feet run about $6,000 to $12,000. Larger or high-detail jobs start around $12,000. Crack repair, prep, pattern, color and sealer all affect the price. We give you a free, itemized estimate after we inspect the concrete in person.
What is the difference between a concrete overlay and resurfacing?
Resurfacing is the general term for putting a new top layer on existing concrete. An overlay is the most common way to do it. It is a thin layer of polymer-modified cement that bonds to the old slab. Some overlays are skim coats that smooth and refresh the surface. Others are thicker stampable mixes, usually about 1/4 to 3/4 inch, that can be patterned to look like stone, slate or brick. We help you pick the right type for your slab and how you use it.
Is resurfacing cheaper than replacing concrete?
Usually, yes, when the slab is sound. Resurfacing skips demolition, haul-off and new base work, and it uses far less material than a new pour. It is not cheaper in the long run if the slab is sunken, heaving or badly broken, because the cracks will come back through the overlay. In that case, replacing the concrete is the better value. We tell you which option makes sense after we inspect it.
How long does a concrete overlay last?
It depends mostly on the slab underneath and the prep. An overlay on sound, well-prepared concrete can last for many years. Overlays fail early when they go over moving slabs, dirty or smooth surfaces that were not ground, or areas where water sits. Keeping the sealer up also matters. Outdoor decorative concrete is commonly resealed every few years to protect the color and surface. We explain the care plan for your finish during the final walkthrough.
Can you resurface a pool deck?
Yes. Pool decks are one of the best uses for resurfacing. We can cover a worn broom finish or rough exposed aggregate with a textured or stamped finish that feels better on bare feet. One customer wrote that after we resurfaced her exposed aggregate pool deck, it looked like stamped concrete and was much more comfortable on the feet. We also check the deck for movement and drainage first.
Can you resurface a cracked driveway?
If the cracks are small and the slab is still level and solid, yes. We repair the cracks, prep the surface and apply an overlay made for car traffic. If sections have sunk, lifted or broken apart, an overlay will not hold, and the cracks will show through again. In that case we recommend driveway repair or replacement, which we also do. Either way, you get an honest answer after we see it.
Is stamped concrete or pavers better for a Houston patio?
Both can look great. Stamped concrete, including a stamped overlay on an existing slab, gives you one continuous surface with a stone or slate look. Pavers flex with Houston's clay soil and can be lifted and replaced one by one if they settle. Stamped surfaces need resealing every few years to keep their color. If you already have a sound slab, a stamped overlay is often the most budget-friendly way to get a patterned look, since there is no demolition or new pour. We price both options for you.
