Landscape Design in Houston, TX

One plan for your beds, lawn, patio, drainage and lighting, built by the same crew that designed it.

Houston Landscape Images (HLI) creates custom landscape design in Houston for homeowners who want a yard with a real plan behind it. We map out planting beds, lawn, patios, walkways, drainage and lighting as one design, then our own crew builds it. Our family-run team has more than 30 years of experience and over 1,000 projects behind it, and we never hand your job to subcontractors.

What You Get From a Custom Landscape Plan:

  • A design built around your yard, your home and how you live
  • Plants and materials picked for Houston heat, rain and clay soil
  • Optional 3D views so you can see it before we build
  • One team from the first sketch to the final walkthrough

Landscape Design Services Built for Houston Yards

A good landscape design starts with your yard, not a template. On the first visit we look at sun and shade, slope, drainage, soil and the trees and features you already have. Houston is flat with dense clay soil, so a plan that moves water away from your home matters as much as the plants you pick.

It may be time for professional landscape design services if:

  • Your yard looks bare, dated or overgrown
  • Water pools in the lawn or beds after a storm
  • You want a patio, walkway or outdoor room but do not know where it should go
  • Plants keep dying in the same spots
  • You need a plan your HOA will approve

Because we handle landscape design and installation in-house, the plan is priced with real build costs and built by the people who drew it.

"We did not have a specific plan in mind and Sanson’s vision and creativity created a wonderful design."

FAQ

Landscape Design FAQs

How much does landscape design cost in Houston?

Most of the landscape design projects we plan and build in the Houston area fall into three ranges. Small projects under 1,000 square feet, like a garden update or compact backyard, run about $5,000 to $15,000. Medium front or backyard makeovers of 1,000 to 3,000 square feet run about $15,000 to $40,000. Large yards and estates with premium materials start around $50,000. Your price depends on size, materials, plants and how much hardscape is in the plan. We start with a free consultation and give you an itemized estimate before any work begins.

Do you design and install, or only design?

We do both. The same family-run team that draws your landscape design also builds it, with no subcontractors. That means the people who know the plan best are the ones putting it in the ground. It also keeps the budget honest, because we price the plan with real install costs in mind.

What is included in a landscape design plan?

A full plan maps out your whole yard. It shows planting zones, trees, shrubs and flower beds, patios and walkways, lawn or turf areas, and how water drains and gets to your plants. It also lists the materials and finishes, like mulch, stone, edging and lighting. We can also add 3D views, so you can see the design before we build it. The plan is also the base for an accurate, itemized price.

Can you design one area now and add more later?

Yes. Many Houston homeowners start with the front yard or one backyard area and add to it over time. We draw the full landscape design first, then split it into phases. Each phase fits the final plan, so nothing has to be torn out later. Ask about phased work during your free consultation if you want to spread the cost out.

Can you help with HOA approval for my landscape design?

Yes. We factor HOA guidelines into the plan from the start. Scaled drawings and 3D views make it easier for your HOA board to see what you want to build. We can put together the plan details your HOA asks for, so your approval request is clear and complete. It is best to get approval before work starts, so plan a little extra time for the board to review it.

How do you plan a landscape for Houston's clay soil and heavy rain?

Houston sits on flat ground with dense clay soil, so water can sit in a yard after a big storm. We check your drainage, slope and soil on the first visit. The design then places beds, lawn and hardscape so water moves away from your home. Where needed, we add grading, French drains or an irrigation layout right into the plan. We also pick plants that can handle Houston heat and wet spells.

How long does a landscape design project take?

It depends on the size of the yard and what is in the plan. A planting refresh is much faster than a full backyard with a patio, water feature and lighting. After the consultation, we give you a timeline with your estimate, so you know when design, prep and installation will happen. Our crew works the job from start to finish, which helps keep the schedule on track.
