Custom Outdoor Kitchens in Houston, TX

Custom outdoor kitchens with tough counters and appliances made for Houston heat, designed and built by our own crew.

An outdoor kitchen Houston families can use all year needs shade, tough counters, and appliances built for heat and humidity. At Houston Landscape Images (HLI), we design and build custom outdoor kitchens that turn your backyard into a place to cook, dine and host.

Our family-run team, based in Richmond, TX, has 30+ years of experience and handles your whole project with our own crew, so quality stays in our hands from design to final walkthrough. Bare patios become full cooking spaces with a built-in grill, counters and storage.

What Your Outdoor Kitchen Gives You

  • A custom layout built around how you cook and host
  • Stone, brick or stucco finishes that match your home
  • Weather-ready counters, cabinets and appliances
  • One family-run team from design through final walkthrough

An Outdoor Kitchen Contractor That Handles Design, Stone and Hookups

Grilling on a bare patio in August means cooking in full sun, running back inside for every plate, and storing tools in the garage. A built-in outdoor kitchen puts the grill, prep space, fridge and storage in one spot, close to where your family and guests gather.

We start with a site visit to look at your patio, drainage and where gas, water and power can reach. Then we plan a layout that fits how you cook, from a simple grill island to a full L-shaped kitchen with a bar. Our crew builds the base, sets the stone and counters, and installs the appliances. We plan the gas, water and electric runs with the layout and coordinate the permits they need. Near Katy? See our page on outdoor kitchens in Katy, TX.

Signs you are ready for an outdoor kitchen

  • You grill most weekends and keep running inside for tools and plates
  • Your freestanding grill is rusting or wearing out
  • Guests crowd the indoor kitchen while you cook outside
  • You have an empty corner of the patio or pool deck
  • You want a covered place to cook, eat and watch the game

"They helped with choosing the right brand appliances for the addition, matched our stone from our spa waterfall from our pool, and matched our granite that we had in our home."

Outdoor Kitchen FAQ

Outdoor Kitchen Questions From Houston Homeowners

How much does an outdoor kitchen cost in Houston?

Most outdoor kitchens we build fall into three ranges. A standard straight layout, about 6 to 8 ft long with a built-in grill, counter space and storage, runs $8,000 to $15,000. A mid-range L-shaped or 10 to 15 ft kitchen with a side burner, mini fridge or sink runs $15,000 to $30,000. Large custom kitchens with high-end appliances, a pizza oven or a vent hood start around $30,000. A patio cover over the kitchen is priced separately. We give you a free, itemized estimate, so you know your outdoor kitchen cost before we build.

Do you need a permit for an outdoor kitchen in Houston?

It depends on the hookups. A simple island with a propane grill may not need one. Once you add a gas line, a sink with water and drain lines, or new electrical circuits, the City of Houston requires permits and inspections for that work. A roof over the kitchen usually needs a building permit too. Suburbs like Sugar Land, Katy and Pearland have their own rules, and HOAs often review plans. We plan for these steps from the start.

What is the best countertop for an outdoor kitchen in Houston?

Granite is a popular pick because it is dense, handles heat and holds up outdoors when it is sealed. Lighter colors stay cooler in direct sun than dark stone. Concrete can be shaped and colored but needs sealing to resist stains. Porcelain slabs are another low-upkeep option. If you already have granite inside, we can often match it outside. We will help you choose based on sun exposure, cooking style and budget.

Should my outdoor kitchen be covered?

In Houston, we usually recommend it. July highs average in the mid-90s and the city gets about 50 inches of rain a year, so a roof keeps the cook comfortable and protects your grill, fridge and cabinets. A patio cover gives full rain protection, while a louvered or covered pergola gives shade with more light. If the kitchen sits away from the house, a pavilion-style gazebo can cover it on its own.

Can you match my house or pool stone?

Yes. We can finish the island in stone, brick or stucco to match your home, your pool coping or an existing fireplace. Customers have asked us to match both the stone from a pool waterfall and the granite inside the house, and we build the layout so the new kitchen looks like part of the original plan.

What appliances can go in an outdoor kitchen?

Most kitchens start with a built-in gas grill. From there you can add side burners, a smoker or kamado, a pizza oven, an outdoor-rated fridge, a sink, an ice maker, and weatherproof stainless steel doors and drawers. We help you choose brands and sizes, then plan the cutouts, clearances, venting and hookups so everything fits and works safely.

How do I choose an outdoor kitchen layout?

Think about how you cook and how many people you host. A straight run works for a grill and prep space. An L-shaped outdoor kitchen adds counter space and a place for bar seating. A U-shape or island gives the most room for serious cooking and entertaining. We also look at where the smoke will blow, how far the kitchen is from your back door, and where gas, water and power can run.
