Texas Law: Irrigation Work Needs a Licensed Irrigator
In Texas, anyone who installs, repairs or services an irrigation system for someone else must be licensed by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), or work under a TCEQ Licensed Irrigator. In the City of Houston, the irrigation permit must be pulled by a master plumber or licensed irrigator registered with the city, and the city inspects the work on site.
Before you hire anyone, ask for the Licensed Irrigator's name and license number and look it up on the TCEQ website.

Do I need a licensed irrigator in Texas?
Yes, if you are hiring someone. Texas law says a person may not sell, design, install, maintain, alter, repair or service an irrigation system unless they are licensed by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ). Irrigation technicians work under a Licensed Irrigator. Homeowners working on their own home are exempt, but they still have to follow the state design rules. In the City of Houston, the irrigation permit must be pulled by a master plumber or licensed irrigator registered with the city. Ask any company for its irrigator's name and license number before you sign.
Why is one sprinkler zone not working?
When one zone won't turn on, the cause is usually at that zone's valve. The solenoid may have failed, a wire may be cut or corroded, or dirt may be stuck inside the valve. If a zone won't turn off, it is often debris holding the valve open. Low pressure in one zone points to a leak, a crushed pipe or clogged heads. We test the controller, the wiring and the valve to find the real problem before we replace parts.
Do I need a rain sensor or smart controller?
In Texas, new automatic irrigation systems must include a rain or moisture shut-off device, and so must repairs that replace the controller. A rain sensor stops the system from running during or right after rain. A smart controller goes further by adjusting run times to the weather and season. For Houston, where a dry week can be followed by several inches of rain, that means less water wasted and fewer soggy spots.
Should I use drip irrigation for flower beds?
Drip is usually the better choice for beds, shrubs and foundation plantings. It puts water right at the roots, so less is lost to wind, overspray and runoff. It also keeps water off leaves and walls. Spray heads and rotors still make sense for open lawn areas. Many of our systems use both: rotors or sprays for the grass, and drip zones for the beds.
Can you fix sprinklers damaged during other construction?
Yes. Pools, patios, fences and drainage work often cut or bury sprinkler lines. We find the damaged pipe and wiring, reconnect or reroute the lines, move heads that now spray onto new hardscape, and test every zone. If we are building the patio or drain ourselves, we plan the sprinkler changes into the same job.
