What is hardscaping?
Hardscaping is the built, non-living part of a yard. It covers patios, walkways, driveways, sidewalks, retaining walls, stone borders, steps and seat walls, made from pavers, natural stone, brick or concrete. Landscaping, in contrast, is the living part: grass, plants, trees and the soil they grow in. Most good yards need both. The hardscape gives you places to walk, sit and park, and the planting softens it and helps with shade and drainage.
What is the difference between hardscaping and landscaping?
Landscaping deals with plants, grass, trees, soil and water. Hardscaping deals with the solid surfaces and structures, like patios, paths, walls and driveways. The two affect each other. A new patio changes where rain runs, and a new bed needs a clean edge against the pavers. Because we do both, we plan the grading, drainage, stone and planting as one project. Are pavers or concrete better for a Houston patio?
Both work well when the base is built right. Pavers are separate units, so they can flex a little as clay soil moves, and one damaged paver can be lifted and replaced. Poured or stamped concrete costs less per square foot in many cases and gives a smooth, even surface, but a slab can crack if the ground shifts. Natural stone like travertine or flagstone costs more and adds a high-end look. We show you samples and explain the tradeoffs at your free site visit.
How much does hardscaping cost in Houston?
It depends on the size, the material and the site prep. From our service pages, small patios start around $5,000 to $15,000, standard walkways around $1,500 to $4,000, basic concrete driveways around $4,000 to $8,000, stone edging around $1,500 to $4,000, and standard concrete overlays around $3,000 to $6,000. Larger or more detailed projects cost more. Every estimate we give is free and itemized, so you can compare options line by line.
How do you keep a patio from cracking or sinking on clay soil?
Most failures start under the surface. Much of the Houston area sits on expansive clay that swells when wet and shrinks when dry. We dig out soft soil, grade the area so water drains away from the house, and build a compacted base before any pavers, stone or concrete go down. For concrete, we add control joints so any cracks form in straight, planned lines. For walls, we plan drainage behind the wall so water does not push on it.
Do I need HOA approval for a new patio or walkway?
Many Houston-area HOAs and deed-restricted neighborhoods ask you to submit plans for visible changes, and some cities and historic districts have their own review rules. The rules differ by neighborhood, so check with your HOA before work starts. At your site visit, we will talk through any rules you know of and plan the design, materials and layout to fit them.
