Larger outdoor living patios start around $25,000. The biggest cost drivers are size, the surface you pick, base and drainage work, and add-ons like seat walls, lighting or a patio cover. Is a paver patio or a concrete patio better in Houston?
Both work well when the base is built right. A concrete patio usually costs less up front and gives you one smooth surface, and stamped concrete can copy the look of stone. A paver patio usually costs more, but each paver is separate. That lets the surface flex a little as clay soil moves, and a damaged paver can be lifted and replaced. How long does it take to build a patio?

Permit rules depend on your city and on the scope of the job, such as whether the patio ties into a patio cover or changes drainage. Can you extend my existing patio?
Yes. Patio extensions come up again and again in our Google reviews. We can pour new concrete next to an old slab, add pavers around it, or cover the old slab with a decorative overlay so the old and new areas match. We check the old slab for cracks and settling first, since a new surface is only as good as what sits under it. If the old slab is failing, we will tell you and price a replacement too.
How do you keep a patio from cracking or sinking on Houston clay?
Good prep is the answer. We remove soft soil, grade the area so water runs away from the house and build a compacted gravel base. For pavers, the base is usually 4 to 6 inches deep for foot traffic and deeper where the soil drains poorly. For concrete, we add reinforcement and control joints. We also plan drains where water collects, because soaked clay swells and dry clay shrinks, and that movement is what cracks slabs and shifts pavers.
Can you add a patio cover, fire pit or outdoor kitchen at the same time?
